Blues Lyrics of the Week: Having a Good Time with the Blues

We just couldn't resist coming back to this tune noted in our earlier post on the Phantom Blues Band's latest, Inside Out (VizzTone Records). Co-written by harmonica ace Charlie Musselwhite and Phantom guitarist Johnny Lee Schell, along with Electric Flag and Chicago Blues Reunion member Barry Goldberg, with vocals masterfully delivered by Phantom keyboardist Mike Finnigan, we may just have to adopt this one as our new theme song.

"Now when I was a young man
working hard on the farm all day,
I never had it easy
keepin' all those demons away.
But I never made a deal
with the devil, don't you know,
cuz' when I met the blues,
it brought goodness to my soul.

The power of blues helped me all throughout my life,
it's always been beside me
through those hard days and lonely nights.
And I'm havin' a good time,
a real good time with the blues.
Yea, I paid my dues
and I'm havin' a good time with the blues."
- Having a Good Time with the Blues, Johnny Lee Schell/Barry Goldberg/Charlie Musselwhite
